Crematogaster scutellaris

Latin Name: Crematogaster scutellaris

Crematogaster scutellaris is a prolific, small European species which can be easily identified by the bright red heads and contrasting black bodies. This species forms its nests in paper and dead wood in the wild. Crematogaster species are identified by sticking their abdomens in the air when disturbed. This species requires good escape prevention as the worker ants are small and can chew through soft materials with ease. Crematogaster scutellaris can be kept at room temperature, however will benefit from some warmth to increase brood development. Overall a fast growing species with some interesting features and suitable for keepers who have some experience already in keeping ants.
