Messor barbarus (European Harvester Ant)

Latin Name: Messor barbarus

Description: Messor barbarus is a common European harvester ant species which is well known for gathering seeds and storing them inside their nest. The larger workers are responsible for chewing up the seeds into ‘ant bread’ which is then distributed throughout the nest for the ants to consume. Harvester ants rarely accept sugary foods and generally rely upon the nutrition of the seeds as a staple diet. Messor barbarus is a polymorph species meaning there are multiple size workers in the colony, commonly referred to as castes. A great starter species and interesting alternative to Lasius niger for beginners.

Morphology: Polymorph (Multiple Castes)

Colony form: Monogyne (Single Queen)
